Summer is a time for students to relax and take a break from stress and homework, but research shows that students that don't practice over the summer can lose around 20 percent of their reading skills gained that year and about 27 percent of the math skills they’ve gained. That is a lot of precious learning out the window and is setting them up to be behind in the fall. It’s been a difficult few years for students, and we want to ensure we’re supporting students as much as possible over the summer.

Studies show that 2-3 hours of practice per week are needed to prevent summer learning loss. That breaks down to just 20-30 minutes per day! And reading doesn't have to be limited to books! We have a lot of resources to help ensure students are still practicing this summer and having fun while doing it!

October is National Bullying Prevention Month in the United States. Founded by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, the month-long event is designed to help prevent childhood bullying and promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. (PACER is an organization founded to advocate for the education of children with disabilities. PACER stand for Parent Advocacy Coalition for Education Rights.)

What is bullying?

Bullying is unwanted, deliberately hurtful behavior that is repeated over a period of time. Bullying is often about an imbalance of power—bullies may use their physical strength, popularity, or something they know about another person to harm or control others.

Forms of bullying

Bullying can take many forms, including verbal, physical, social, and cyberbullying (a form of bullying on digital devices).

Verbal bullying includes name-calling, teasing, inappropriate comments, threats, and abusive comments.

Physical bullying includes hitting, kicking, spitting, tripping, and stealing or damaging possessions.

Social bullying includes deliberately excluding someone from social events, spreading rumors about a person, and embarrassing or humiliating someone.

Cyberbullying includes harassment and abuse via a cell phone, on social media sites, or online.

Why bullying is serious

Bullying is serious because it can have a damaging effect on the person being bullied, on the person doing the bullying, or even on the bystanders who witness incidents of bullying. Bullying creates a climate of fear, and bystanders may be anxious that they will be next on the bully’s list of targets. The targets, the people who are being bullied, are more likely to lack self-confidence, have low self-esteem, have difficulty concentrating, and suffer from depression and anxiety. People who bully are at greater risk than others of becoming involved in violence and crime. Bullies also have a higher risk of struggling or failing at their school studies.

Getting Help

You may feel ashamed to admit you are being bullied. But it’s the bullies who should feel ashamed, not you. Remember that bullying is the cowards’ way. It takes a lot of courage to speak out against bullies.

Bullying is very distressing. If you are the target of bullies, it may well be too much for you to handle on your own. Don’t put yourself in danger. Tell an adult you know and trust. If the bullying is happening at school, speak to a teacher, a school counselor, or the principal about your problem. These adults are in a better position to help you by becoming involved in the situation. There are also many organizations that you can turn to for support. Here are some websites that provide information about dealing with bullying:

Back to School

Are you ready for back to school? The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on education is of important consideration for teachers, and parents who home school their children. Many schools have experienced school closures and have had to rely on online tools and resources for the classroom and at-home learning.

In the face of learning losses, it is critical to provide young learners with the tools they need to get ahead. Educators and parents alike need to be well-equipped with resources that allows the transition back into the classroom a breeze. Luckily for them, World Book has created FREE ready-made material to help introduce students and parents to World Book at the start of the school year and ideas on how to use World Book resources to build classroom community. These resources were compiled to help educators and parents with sharable one-pagers for ideas in Early Learning, Kids, Student, Advanced, Discover, eBooks, and Timelines found on the Teaching Topics page of the Training Guide.

Check out these resources for back to school:

Back to School Tips for Teachers

Project-based learning with World Book online

STEM resources

Teachers also require resources that will help supplement their classroom curriculum with resources that inspire collaborative learning.

Here’s a quick glance at some of World Book’s supplemental classroom materials:

The Spinescape® was specifically selected because sharks are a high-interest topic to students K-12 and World Book has a desire to support shark conservation, "There are a lot of misconceptions about sharks out there," says Tom Evans, World Book's Editor in Chief. "Sharks have the reputation of attacking human beings. But fewer than 80 shark attacks a year are reported throughout the world," adds Tom. This year's Spinescape® comes from the award-winning photographer, Tanya Houppermans, who gave up her job as a mathematician to research and help with shark conservation.

After the holidays, perhaps the largest celebration for students is the 100th day of school. From the very first day, classes begin keeping track of the number of days they have been in school in anticipation of the 100th day. It is a milestone that represents progress, growth, and achievement. For educators, this is likely a moment for reflection: What’s been working well? What hasn’t been? What are your goals for the rest of the school year? For students, it is the perfect opportunity for creative learning and celebration. Below we have compiled a list of engaging activities to celebrate the occasion. You can do them both in the classroom or at home as a family.

If You Were 100...

Kids love dress-up days, and it doesn't get much cuter than having your students come to school or join their Google Meet, Flipgrid, or Zoom dressed like 100-year-olds. Beforehand, develop a fun writing assignment as a supplement. Have your students imagine what their lives would be like if they were 100—what they would look like and where they would be living. It is an opportunity to express themselves through their writing while allowing them to think about the future. Plus, it's sure to bring on the giggles!

Read 100 Books

For obvious reasons, this one’s our favorite! When we hear the terms “virtual learning” or “remote learning,” it’s easy to imagine students spending eight hours a day in front of a computer or tablet. Leading up to the 100th Day, challenge your students to take a break from screen time and read 100 pages or even 100 books. Keep a chart or poster in the classroom or at home to encourage kids to track their progress. If they meet the goal, reward them with a special prize, such as a bookmark or extra time at recess.

Think Outside the Box

A popular idea for marking the occasion is to have your students make shirts or hats with one hundred of something on them, such as googly eyes, buttons, or stickers. Encourage kids to think outside the box! It’s a great creative exercise and a great opportunity for younger students to show off their newly developed math skills by counting from 1 to 100—by ones, fives, tens, then twenties, and more.

Let’s Get Physical

Keeping students active is crucial for their mental and physical health—especially now! The CDC recommends that children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 years old do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. But what to do if you’re stuck indoors? Challenge your students to do 100 sit-ups or push-ups, 100 jumping jacks, or turn on their favorite music and dance for 100 seconds. Dancing is one of the easiest ways to get your body moving. Afterward, reward kids who finish with a certificate of completion.

100 Acts of Kindness

Help students and families get what they need to help others through this pandemic! First, have students collect 100 cans of fruits, vegetables, and beans and donate them to a local soup kitchen or school family in need. Then, as a class, brainstorm 100 Acts of Kindness that will be safe to do while staying at home! Invite your students throughout the day to add to the list and help to spread a little kindness and brighten someone’s day. Here are a few ideas to help get you started.

Listen to your teacher and follow directions.

Call, write a letter, or make a card for a relative.

Do not fight with your siblings.

Draw kind messages and colorful pictures on your sidewalks.

FaceTime a friend to say hello.

Leave thank-you notes for essential workers—delivery drivers, garbage collectors, etc.

Give your parents a big hug.

Do your chores without complaining.

Tell each of your family members one thing you love about them.

Go, Team, Go!

Are you looking for a great team-building activity? Create a classroom scavenger hunt requiring students to find 100 small items, things like buttons, Hershey kisses, paper cutouts, and more. It is a good way to motivate students such that they feel compelled to work together (social-emotional learning) and complete an accomplishment. Add a learning component by having them guess how much the items weigh, then see how close they get!

It is so hard to believe that the school year is more than halfway over. Tag us in your 100th day of school celebrations using @worldbookinc and get featured on our Instagram page.

Though related, the two events differ greatly in tone and unique traditions. Where Halloween often focuses upon the frightening aspects of death, Day of the Dead festivities unfold with vibrant colors and are very much a happy occasion. The intention is to demonstrate love and respect for family members who have passed away. In mostly Mexico and throughout Latin America, people of all ages spill into streets wearing funky makeup and costumes, singing, dancing, and making offerings to lost loved ones. It is an extremely social occasion!

Families gather in churches, at cemeteries, and in homes. As the centerpiece of the celebration, many prepare an elaborate altar, known as an ofrenda (offering). But these altars are not for worship; rather, they are created to welcome souls of departed family members and friends back to the realm of the living. As such, they’re loaded with such offerings as drinks to quench their thirst, fruits, popular foods, family photos, and marigold flowers. Served in the shape of skulls, skeletons, and other symbols of death, special candies and pan de muerto (bread of the dead), a sweet bread, are popular treats! Día de los muertos is usually celebrated on November 2. That day is the Roman Catholic feast of All Souls' Day. In some communities, the dead are remembered over several days, including November 1, All Saints' Day, and its eve, October 31. The celebration combines ancient native beliefs and Catholic traditions.

Día de los Muertos reinforces the ancient belief that death is a part of life. It is an extremely important tradition through which families pass on their oral histories. By recalling stories of past family members, it helps to keep these ancestors alive for future generations!

Stumped on what to be for Halloween this year? Well, we have found a solution that's sure to spark an endless amount of costume inspiration: your bookshelf (yes, we’re serious). Some of the best dress-up ideas can be plucked straight from the pages of some of your favorite books. Halloween presents the perfect opportunity for kids, teachers, librarians, and parents to be anything they want to be: firefighters, astronauts, inventors, athletes, robots, and more! Show your love of food by dressing up as salt and pepper or strawberry jam (from our mouthwatering Taste the World series). Want to go as a mysterious abnormal creature? We suggest dressing up as Bigfoot, a Unicorn, or a Mermaid from Abnormal Field Guides to Cryptic Creatures. To help get your wheels turning, we have rounded up our favorite book series characters to dress up as this Halloween! Regardless of what you choose as your main source of inspiration, a literary-inspired costume is an easy, smart, and conversation-starting choice.

If you’re a foodie, step up your dress-up game with a clever food-themed costume this year, inspired by our Taste the World! series.
If you’re a sports fanatic, dress up as your favorite player! From catching touchdowns, scoring goals, or slamming acrobatic dunks, this series takes a look at some of history’s greatest athletes, from Patrick Mahomes to LeBron James, Aaron Judge to Tom Brady, and more.

If you want to be a space explorer, blast off with Out of This World 2 and you could be trading your astronaut spacesuit costume for the real deal.

Many of the world’s renowned scientists started life as curious young children who thought big thoughts and asked big questions. Back with a second set, our new Out of This World 2 will inspire the budding scientists in your life with science stories and inquiry adventures. Whether it’s discovering the unique problems of living in space, exploring Mars and Venus, or protecting humans and spacecraft from dangerous conditions, this series is the perfect launch pad for exploration.

The books in the Out of This World 2 series feature projects that have won grants from the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program (NIAC). Meet eight high-profile scientists, and learn all about the cutting-edge innovations they are working on to push the boundaries of space exploration today!

Titles in the series include:

Clockwork Venus Rover (with Jonathan Sauder)—Venus is one of the most challenging planets to explore. Its acidic clouds, crushing pressures, and searing heat destroy even the toughest space probes. Learn how engineer Jonathan Sauder plans to overcome these challenges using the same technology that makes clocks tick.

Expandable Space Habitat (with Anthony Longman)—Would you like to live in space? Today, only a few astronauts live there at a time, crammed into tiny spacecraft and space stations. But larger and more comfortable quarters are needed to truly open up space for development. Learn how architect Anthony Longman plans to create an expandable space habitat that will allow thousands of people to live, work, and play in space.

Fusion-Powered Spacecraft (with Stephanie Thomas)—Probes to the outer solar system take many years to reach their destinations. They get there with only enough power for basic instruments and grainy communication back to Earth. What if we could get high-definition video of Saturn’s rings? Learn how aerospace engineer Stephanie Thomas plans to create a rocket that can get to the outer planets much faster and provide plenty of power.

Leaping Low-Gravity Explorers (with Marco Pavone)—Asteroids and comets are hard to explore up close. Their low gravity makes it difficult to land on them—and to travel on them without floating away! What if you could turn this disadvantage into an advantage? Learn how engineer Marco Pavone plans to build a rover to bounce across an asteroid.

Mars-Exploring Flying Swarm (with Chang-kwon Kang)—Flying probes would be a good way to gather lots of information about some planets and large moons in our solar system. But flying is a particular challenge in Mars’s thin atmosphere. Learn how aerospace engineer Chang-kwon Kang plans to build fliers for Mars inspired by butterflies and bees.

Martian Cave Colonies (with Penny Boston)—The surface of Mars is fraught with danger for a human traveler. An unbreathable atmosphere, icy temperatures, and harmful radiation are just some of the hazards. But things are a little more inviting below the surface. Learn how NASA astrobiologist Penny Boston plans to create living spaces in caves for the first Martian explorers.

Second-Skin Space Suit (with Dava Newman)—How are astronauts going to explore Mars? Previous space suits have been bulky and cumbersome—but maybe we can fix that with new designs. Learn how engineer Dava Newman plans to create a new space suit that will enable us to explore the Red Planet in comfort and style.

Solar-Surfing Space Probes (with Robert Youngquist)—The sun’s rays heat up everything in our solar system. Without complex cooling systems for spacecraft, electronics break down and rocket fuel boils. What if there was a simple coating that could keep spacecraft cool? Learn how NASA engineer Bob Youngquist plans to use his Solar White coating to allow spacecraft to practically touch the sun!

Out of This World 2 was reviewed by Booklist in May 2021 in which they wrote, “Each volume features brief paragraphs and accessible language, ample technical background, biographical details, and pop-culture references (“Star Trek,” “Lost in Space,” The Martian), plus the cutting-edge technology should capture and keep the attention of readers.”

Explore these intriguing science titles today and who knows? You may just inspire the next great scientist of our era. Available for pre-order now and ready to ship May 21st, 2021.

With the advancements in technology over the years, kids learning how to code is growing rapidly in popularity around the world, as many view computing as a new literacy in tomorrow’s job market. Computers have shaped every major industry, including such varied ones as agriculture, health care, and transportation. This transformation has created a growing demand for computer programmers who can write the code needed to advance these industries. Additionally, the ability to code has also become an important skill because people increasingly rely on computers to help with many aspects of life. Our smartphones, televisions, thermostats, modern cars, and many other common devices depend on code to run properly.

We are going to look at the benefits of kids learning to code. But first, what exactly is coding? Coding is the process of creating instructions that a computer can carry out. Such instructions are generally written using computer languages or programming languages. Just as there are many human languages that people use to communicate with one another, there are many programming languages that people can use to communicate with computers. Instructions written in a programming language are called code. Coding makes it possible for us to create such things as computer software, websites, and apps. Coding can also be used to control robots, drones, and internet-enabled devices. Some people write code to produce artwork. Others do it to automate boring, repetitive tasks. People sometimes learn to code simply for the challenge of mastering a complex skill.

A computer programmer, also called a coder, is a person who writes code to instruct computers to do particular jobs. Computers can perform a wide range of tasks to accomplish a job efficiently. For example, computers can perform mathematical calculations; store and retrieve large amounts of information; analyze data to identify trends; and display graphics. To get a computer to perform such tasks, a programmer must be able to write and debug code. Debugging code involves identifying and fixing any mistakes—called bugs—that prevent the code from working properly. A programmer must also be able to organize the code's structure in such a way that the code works accurately and efficiently.

So, how do we teach our children how to code, and why is this so important?

Living in the 21st century, children are growing up in a digital era, and coding is a skill that can be used every day. While many people see coding as a highly technical skill, it is, in fact, another form of literacy. There are so many benefits of coding for students that go much beyond the use of a computer. Having children learn how to code at a young age not only sets them up for a lifetime of success, but helps with communication skills, problem-solving, creativity, math skills, writing, and boosts confidence.

Many resources are available for children at any skill level who are interested in learning to code. They include interactive online courses and video tutorials. Many toys and games on the market today make it fun for kids to learn the basics of coding. Some toy robots, such as Cue and Sphero, can be programmed to perform a variety of functions. Children, teens, and adults can build and program their own robots using Lego Mindstorms kits. Players who design their own games in the electronic gaming platform Roblox can learn simple coding sequences to add to the complexity of their creations. Scratch is another programming language for children and teenagers that allows them to make games and videos.

Kids who wish to learn coding and computer basics can explore our Building Blocks of Computer Science book series. In the newest installment of our popular Building Blocks series, join Al, Stack, Tasky, and other colorful characters in a graphic-novel style adventure into fundamental concepts in computer science. Developed in consultation with a coding bootcamp, this series makes complex computer topics engaging and accessible. Also includes online access to downloadable computer science activities that support and enhance learning!

Series titles: Algorithms, Coding Languages, Debugging, Hardware, Logic in Coding, Order in Coding, Organizing Data, and The Internet.

“World Book’s new graphic nonfiction series depicts the wonders of computing and includes an array of characters related to computer science, such as Chip, the computer chip, and Bug, the programming error. Each character takes readers through different worlds, from physical hardware to core concepts related to coding like debugging and algorithms. These titles are rich in technological vocabulary without overwhelming readers with computer jargon. The text also respects readers’ intelligence by connecting the concepts to everyday experiences, such as gaming.”

After the holidays, perhaps the largest celebration for elementary students is the 100th day of school. From the very first day, classes begin keeping track of the number of days they have been in school in anticipation of the 100th day. It is a milestone that represents progress, growth, and achievement. For educators, this is likely a moment for reflection: What has been working well? What has not? What are your goals for the rest of the school year? For students, it is the perfect opportunity for creative learning and celebration. Below we have compiled a list of engaging activities to celebrate the occasion. You can do them both in the classroom or at home as a family.

If They Were 100...

Leading up to 100th Day, challenge your students to take a break from screen time and read 100 books or even 100 pages. Keep a chart or poster in the classroom or at home to encourage kids to track their progress. If they meet the goal, reward them with a World Book bookmark or extra time at recess (virtually or in-school).

Think Outside the Box

A popular idea for marking the occasion is to have your students make shirts or hats with one hundred of something on them, like wiggly eyes, buttons, or safety pins. Encourage kids to think outside the box! It’s a great creative exercise and a great opportunity for younger students to show off their newly developed math skills by counting from 1 to 100—by ones, fives, tens, the twenties, and more.

Challenge your students to do 100 sit-ups or pushups, 100 jumping jacks, or turn on their favorite music and dance for 100 seconds (which is roughly a minute and a half). Dancing is one of the easiest ways to get your body moving. Afterward, reward kids who finish with a certificate of completion.

Give Back

Help students and families get what they need to survive and even thrive through this pandemic!

Leave thank you notes for essential workers—delivery drivers, garbage collectors, etc.

Give your parents a big hug.

Do your chores without complaining.

Tell each of your family members one thing you love about them.

Stay 6 feet away from other people, even your grandparents.

Go, Team, Go!

Are you looking for a great team-building activity? Create a classroom scavenger hunt requiring students to find 100 small items, like buttons, Hershey kisses, paper cutouts, and more. It is a good way to motivate students in a way that they feel compelled to work together (social-emotional learning) and complete a task. Add a learning component by having them guess how much the items weigh, then weigh them.

It is so hard to believe that the school year is more than halfway over. Tag us in your 100th day of school celebrations using @worldbookinc and get featured on our Instagram page.

Just like the title, this blog is all about encyclopedias! Whether you’re familiar with them or brand new, we’re going to go through what they are, how to use them, and why you need to have one! Follow along as we go through the ins and outs of a product that has been a library and home staple for over 100 years!

What is an encyclopedia?

The World Book Encyclopedia is the only general A-Z print research source still published today. Along with over 17,000 articles, the encyclopedia also contains useful advice about studying and report writing for elementary through intermediate grade students. Thousands of index entries make it easy to find information wherever it is in the set. Abundant colorful photos, diagrams, charts, tables, and maps supplement the easy-to-read text.

How do you use it?

Encyclopedias can be used for school, library, and at-home research. First, decide on an age-appropriate encyclopedia for you or your student. World Book offers both high level and lower level encyclopedias (such as the Discovery Encyclopedia and Discovery Science Encyclopedia) with more images and bigger text for younger readers. Then, finding a topic is simple with the easy-to-use A-Z index that points directly to any article you need! Our editors have gone through hundreds of educational resources and written the articles in the encyclopedia to be short and concise, so you get the best information and fast! Use the diagrams, charts, and pictures to further understand a topic.

Why do you need it?

There is a real sense of security in being able to direct children to resources like encyclopedias and other reference materials! Starting with a trusted source in the research phase of a project saves students time and gives them a good foundation and point of comparison when they move on to online resources.

In 22 hard-cover volumes full of accurate and trustworthy facts, The World Book Encyclopedia set provides the most up-to-date information in formats tailored for school-aged learners. Sharpen critical thinking, hone research skills, dive deeply into an understanding of a topic, and round-out classroom curricula with expertly written, unbiased articles. This is why World Book is one of the most trusted sources and why encyclopedias continue to play such a crucial role in schools, libraries, and at home today.

Once upon a time in the Danish town of Odense, there lived a fairy tale writer named Hans Christian Andersen. His friends called him H.C. for short! He wrote stories of mermaids, ballerinas, emperors, and kings. Initially, his tales appeared in a series of pamphlets, and later were collected and published in books. His stories became popular in the early 1840’s and made Andersen the best-known author in Denmark and the best-known storyteller throughout the world.

Andersen gave each tale its own style, but his stories can be roughly classified into several groups: imitations of folk tales ("The Tinder Box," "Little Claus and Big Claus," and "The Traveling Companion"); tales based on Andersen's life ("The Ugly Duckling" and "She Was Good for Nothing"); tales that make fun of human faults ("The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Rags"); and philosophical tales ("The Story of a Mother" and "The Shadow"). Some of the tales use settings in Denmark ("The Wind Tells About Valdemar Daae and His Daughters" and "Holger Danske"), but others can take place anywhere. He wrote with wisdom, deliberate simplicity, and often with sly humor. His fairy tales are among the most widely read works in world literature.

But long before he became a famous writer, he was a young boy discovering adventure on the cobbled streets of Denmark. And young H.C. was not just an ordinary boy, he was a boy with a magical hat—and an even more magical imagination! Join young H.C. Andersen on a wondrous journey as he meets characters that would later inspire his famous tales as he battles with those who want to steal his magic hat and his very imagination.

Have you heard of the “summer slide”? Unfortunately, it’s not the fun kind of slide you’ll find at a playground or waterpark. It’s the educational phenomenon referring to the backslide that many kids experience if they completely unplug from learning over the summer. Educators have said they are likely to see a stronger slide this summer than in years past because of the early ending of the traditional school year, plus the reduction or elimination of summer programs.

So how can you prevent it? Here’s the secret: keep learning all summer long! Now, don’t panic, we are not suggesting year-round schooling. We are talking about consciously striving to provide learning opportunities each day to keep kids’ academic skills sharp. Join us as we explore digital and reading resources, hands-on activities, and fun recipes we have to help combat the summer slide.

1. Math & Literacy-Building Resources

Use It! Don't Lose It! Keep students' minds sharp this summer with our at-home activity books. Each workbook reinforces topics in the curricula and makes even the most complex topics easy to understand for students of all reading levels. These math and language arts activity books are full of engaging puzzles, stories, and adventures to explore as students practice skills that are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. These supplemental activities are perfect for reinforcing specific skills that may be difficult for some students to master. See for yourself! try a free week’s worth of math problems here.

2. Disguised Learning Resources

World Book Online has lots of disguised learning resources to keep kids reading and learning while having tons of fun over the summer. From tracing games to print and do activities, to interactive maps and Trivia Quizzes, there is something for preschool and early elementary to advanced students.

3. Reading Resources

With endless activities calling, it can be a challenge for many parents to get their kids to pick up a book. If you have a reluctant reader, a really great book series is like magic! Once your child becomes involved with the story and characters, chances are they will be excited to read the next one as soon as they’ve finished.

We've compiled a list, which includes some of their very favorite high-interest series, that also support the 2020 Collaborative Summer Library Program's theme of “Fairy Tales/Mythology/Fantasy.”

The absolute best way to celebrate this day would be to find the time to do some reading! We are excited to announce our new print releases and invite you to explore them for yourself.

Picture this: Your face on the front page of the paper with the caption, "The only person to find Bigfoot!" Professor Abner Normal has all the tricks to lead readers on an educational (and unconventional) safari in search of the world’s most mysterious creatures.

Be a Leader

Introduce colors, counting, and shape recognition to beginning readers with this fun and interactive series! Each book invites readers to point to the shapes and number of objects that correspond with each color while helping develop literacy skills. Vibrant, real-life photography and tightly controlled text work together to provide an engaging and supportive reading experience.

Minding Emotions

Social and emotional learning (SEL) helps children manage emotions, establish positive habits in communication, create and achieve goals, and make good decisions. Each book in Minding Emotions highlights a different emotion, how we experience and show it, how we can identify it in others, and how we can best respond to and understand these feelings.

Our Solar System

Our Solar System introduces the sun and everything that orbits it—the planets, dwarf planets, dozens of moons, and millions of asteroids, comets, and meteors—in an engaging new format that is sure to draw reader interest. Spectacular NASA photos and illustrations inspire readers to explore the wonders of our cosmic neighborhood while STEM-appropriate text describes discoveries in planetary science in easy-to-read language.

The Adventures of Young H.C. Andersen

Everyone knows the fairy tales of the great Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. But what if Andersen’s magical tales were inspired by the fantastic adventures he had as a boy? This comic book-style series presents the daring adventures of a young H.C. Join him as he meets characters that would inspire his famous fairy tales, including “The Little Mermaid,” “Thumbelina,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “The Snow Queen.” This series encourages readers—and H.C.—to explore, embrace, and celebrate their imagination.

The Sky's the Limit

The Sky’s the Limit helps readers create constructive attitudes, build confidence, and foster positive peer networks. Each title empowers the reader, detailing specific practices and mindfulness activities they can participate in daily to help achieve their goals while reinforcing the concepts of social and emotional learning (SEL).

True or False? 3

The True or False? series reveals the surprising truths behind common misconceptions and teaches the coolest facts about high-interest topics, from UFOs to dogs, comic books, robots, pop music, and more! The engaging, play-along format makes learning exciting!

Dear Educators,

The events over the past few weeks and uncertainty about what is to come are unprecedented, but it is a period that we will get through together as a community, as we always do. Whether you are directly or indirectly impacted, we know that COVID-19 is placing a significant strain on the ability of educators to reach their learners, causing much stress for schools and libraries, as well as for children and their parents. World Book has been a partner supporting the education community since 1917, and we are here to continue to support you today and through these challenging times.

For over 100 years, our missions have been aligned. To further support you and your remote learning efforts, we are providing all of our valued educators with access to additional Pre-K to grade 12 learning resources through April 30, 2020. To gain access to these additional complimentary resources, please click here.

We created this guide to support you, your team, parents, grandparents, caregivers, or anyone using our resources remotely. To further support virtual learning, next week we will be launching Wizard, an adaptive learning resource for math, science, social studies, and language arts. This resource can help augment teacher and parent efforts by:

Ensuring that kids retain content taught earlier this school year, and

Providing teachers and parents the opportunity to assign new learning topics and to monitor students’ progress on each topic, ensuring that they are learning and mastering standards-based content.

When you click to gain access to the additional complimentary resources, you will automatically have access to Wizard when it becomes available next week, without any further action.

If we can do anything more to help in your efforts, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our hearts and thoughts go out to everyone in your community.
