Throughout history, women have made important contributions to the advancement of science and medicine. Women have participated in all fields of scientific and medical work—from searching for clues to the origin of the universe to examining the structure of molecules in the cells of living plants and animals. Still others have developed new medical treatments, investigated why we act the way we do, or solved complicated mathematical problems.
Most women have received little attention for their contributions to the fields of science and medicine. However, several extraordinary women have received major honors for the roles they played in discoveries that helped change the world.
To celebrate the achievements of these women, World Book editors have compiled a series of articles about some of the most influential women in science and medicine and how their efforts have helped explain how the world works.
