Picture: De Lome Letter

(Home Article: Spanish-American War)

The De Lome Letter of 1898 was written by Enrique Dupuy de Lome, Spanish ambassador to the United States, to Jose Canelejas, foreign minister of Spain. In the letter, De Lome made critical remarks about United States President William McKinley. The letter was intercepted and published in the U.S. press. It helped foster public support for the Spanish-American War, in which the United States fought with Spain over the issue of the liberation of Cuba. A copy of the De Lome Letter's first page is shown here.
