How long do sea turtles live? Presented by Carol Haley, Assistant Curator of Fishes, Tennessee Aquarium, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Featured Animals Books:
Sea turtles are large turtles that live almost their whole lives in the ocean. They hatch from eggs laid on land, but immediately enter the water. They can travel thousands of miles across the seas. Their large flippers make them excellent swimmers. However, they are awkward on land, dragging themselves along with their flippers.
Life of Sea Turtles
Sea turtles can live a long time and some of them can live more than 150 years, depending on the species. Scientists are not sure how long sea turtles live, but they may outlive humans. Females of some species may reach 35 or more years of age before reproducing. But many sea turtles are caught in fishing nets, and the species is threatened because of loss of habitat.
