Who were the Aztec?

The Aztec were an American Indian people who lived in Mesoamerica more than 500 years ago. The word Aztec came from the name Aztlan. Today, the word Aztec refers to the American Indians in central Mexico who have similar languages and beliefs. Aztec people lived in an area centered on the valley of Mexico, which is a huge, oval region surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. The Aztec had one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas.
