Follow the Digestive System

In this activity, students will review what they know about the digestive system. Students will work in pairs to identify major structures found within this system. In addition, they will apply their knowledge and collaborate to determine how food travels through our digestive system.

Objective:

Students will be able to identify the major structures of the digestive system and describe how they aid in digestion.

Materials:

• Building Blocks of the Human Body series, specifically The Digestive and Urinary Systems

• Follow the Digestive System Worksheet (1 per student)

• Follow the Digestive System Worksheet Answer Key

• Pencils

Differentiation Considerations:

For additional support, provide students with a word bank to aid them in completing the second half of this assignment.

Procedures:

  1. Print the worksheet and answer key from the downloads section.
  2. Explain to students that today they will review what they know about the digestive system and how its structures aid in the process of digestion. Review that digestion is the process where food is broken down and absorbed by the body.
  3. Explain the assignment to students by first describing how they will work in pairs to label the parts of the digestive system. They can use their Building Blocks books or other resources for support here.
  4. Next, explain that students will work with their partner to determine which digestive system structure best matches the story situation provide. Students will need to use their inferring and reasoning skills to help them determine the correct answers.
  5. After providing work time, review the correct responses. Because students worked in pairs during this activity, it might benefit your students to reflect on their collaboration skills.
